Lit Up With Arts is a project which looks at the impact of music on language and literacy, particularly speaking and listening.
This was originally a two year project, which was kindly extended to four years with increased funding by Paul Hamlyn Foundation. Each year seven primary one classes have received 25 weeks of music specialist led sessions, with guest artists in drama, storytelling, dance, bubble blowing and visual arts. One of the years had online delivery on our Artsplay Highland YouTube channel, with our welcome return this year to in-person sessions in the classrooms. Children's teachers and our music specialists have found that among other skill development, our music sessions improve listening skills and help language development, particularly for the children in Gaelic medium classes and children who have English as an additional language. The children just think they're having fun, playing musical games, moving creatively, playing percussion instruments and experiencing wonderful new arts through guest artists' visits. Some reviews from children, parents and carers!
